Frige Fretting
One afternoon I came home from work and began to cook supper. I kept hearing a strange noise from the refrigerator. It sounded like the icemaker was having an issue. When my husband came home I mentioned it and we had dinner without a concern. We are in the habit of having an ice cream (sugar free and low fat) each evening after we have our bath, Bible Study and prayer. When I went to get our ice cream out of the freezer side of the refrigerator, it was a melted mess. Yikes, we checked the temperature in the refrigerator and it was up to over 50 degrees. We began to try to call a repairman but had no luck that late at night. We saved what we could in our friend’s freezer and threw away the rest.
Early the next morning, Teddy met the repairman who replaced a relay and we were back in business. We had nothing in the refrigerator except the refrigerator thermometer. We kept checking and the temperature was still not at the desired 40 degrees although it was cooling and the freezer was at 0 degrees. I bet we opened that refrigerator door twenty times to check the temperature. Finally, we decided (we are not that smart sometimes) that we should leave the door closed for several hours and then check the temperature. You know what the result was. A perfect 40 degrees! That refrigerator was busy doing its job and we just kept interfering.
I don’t know about you, but I am often like that with the Lord. When things do not move as quickly as I would like or a prayer goes unanswered, I begin to open the door of my resources to try to make sure things are moving along. Waiting does not come easy to me. I am probably a Type A person who may also be hyperactive. When someone mentions waiting, I begin to perspire.
The Bible is so clear about waiting and being anxious. I can think of not one scripture that directs us to busy ourselves with opening the door to check on God’s progress when what we need to do is step back and let God do His work.
Have you frequently opened the door to check the temperature on a situation in your life? Have you trusted the Lord to work even when you cannot see the immediate results? Have you sometimes felt that you needed to help the Lord and then realize that you have hindered His plan by your interference? Step away from the door!
Psalm 25:5
“Lead me in Your truth and teach me for You are the God of my salvation; on You I wait all the day.”
Isaiah 40:31
“But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”
