A Familiar Face
Recently, someone told my daughter how much he thought we looked alike. She told me that someone at her school saw me on the sidewalk when I visited her school and knew that I was her mom. She said “I knew that was your mom because she walks just like you”.
Those comments left me thinking about my relationship with God. When I meet someone for the first time, do they recognize the familiar face of my Heavenly Father? Is there something about my daily walk and speech that would cause them to say “You look like your Father”?
When I think about the character of God, I think of mercy, grace, forgiveness, love, longsuffering, comfort and generosity. When I am focused on myself and my desires, I cannot reflect the face of God.
When we meet people, we should remember that we may be the only face of God in their life. Perhaps we have been sent to allow them to see God’s face through our walk. We may be the person God has sent to show love, hope, kindness, peace, comfort, rest or forgiveness. Many times, it is in our time of trails that people can see the character of God at work in our life. When someone looks in my eyes, do they see kindness, humility, forgiveness, patience and love, or do they see bitterness, anger, greed and pride?
We look, talk and walk like those we spend the most time with. How can we look like Christ if we do not spend time seeking His face and walking in His ways? How can we make time in our busy day to spend time with the Lord? You schedule it. You make it a part of our routine to meet the Lord and seek His will for your life and to get to know His character through Bible Study and prayer.
My husband and I have a devotion and prayer time each evening. What a precious part of my day to spend time hearing my husband pray over his family and praise God for the blessing He provides. This is a routine in our day. We know that after our bath time that we will have our devotion and prayer time.
I keep scripture cards in my car so that I can always grab them as I wait at a drive through or am waiting in traffic. I have a devotional book that I keep in my car so at lunch I can spend a few minutes focusing on the character of my Lord and Savior. During that lunch break I spend a few minutes in prayer for my family and friends.
Listening to Christian music is so important to me. The words of the songs remind me of God’s holiness, faithfulness, love, power and grace.
Lori and I walk alike because of spending many years walking together. Reflecting the character of the Lord can only happen if we spend time walking with Him. Are you walking with the Lord each day? Are there ways you could spend more time getting to know the Lord and His will for your life?
Psalm 119:11
Thy word have I hid in mine heart that I might not sin against thee.
Psalm 73:28
But it is good for me to draw near to God. I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all thy work.
Romans 12:2
And be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
